Mycorrhizae is defined as symbiotic between fungus and Roots of higher plants.

They are of two types:-

a) Ectomycorrhizae :fungal hyphae(Basidiomycetes)on the surface of root outside.It provide nitrogen (N2), phosphorus(P), potassium (K).

Eg. Pinus,oak,peach, Eucalyptus (POPE)

b) Endomycorrhizae:-fungal hyphae (ascomycetes) penetrate the cortical cells either forms swollen vesicles or finely branched masses called arbuscles.

  • VAM(Vesicular Arbuscular Mycorrhizae) are important for phosphate absorption.
  • Eg. Grasses, coffee, pepper,cardamon, woody plants.
